Broadcast Technology To Follow. Editing Technology, and Digital Technologies.
SolfestFM uses Apple Macintosh, and Sun technologies for editing, output recording, server and storage.
Specifics:
Digital Editing uses Apple Macintosh hardware with Digital Performer 5, SADIE, Peak and host of other software to perform specific tasks. The list varies from year to year as the software matures.
Digital Playout uses several output devices MOTU being a favourite alongside playlist software on Apple served by a Sun Sparc running Solaris 10. We also have an occasional ipod from a DJ !! Live and Direct!!
Digital Recording comes in two flavours - recording and recoding output and recording content.
SolfestFM records all output in accordance with broadcast regulations. This is handled by an Apple Macintosh with timecoded software which files to several drives.
Recording Content Digitally and Interviews uses a variety of recording manufacturers which will then be brought back to main site for editing.
We mainly use solid state recorders for ease of editing, and programme making. See above for more details.
Other Technology.
SolfestFM is trying to hard to reduce its impact on the environment and strives to make itself zero carbon. 2008 saw the introduction of solar powered broadcasting. This was small step in the right direction that highlighted the difficulties of broadcasting at zero carbon. The Solar unit powered our transmitter and we are hoping for more steps in 2009.
SolfestFM Session Tent.
SolfestFM has been very lucky to able to host some private sessions from its own tent. Last year we had some superb smaller sessions in whcih musicians would come into the intimate atmosphere andperform to a small audience while SolfestFM was able to record and broadcast their music.
To do this we use a small sound rig and some high tech mics in order to get a great sound AND a great recoding. As such SolfestFM has some wonderfull one-off recordings which capture the spirit of Solfest and of brings the music closer to the listener. Podcats which include some of these sessions can be found a the blue link.
